PTE Reading – MCQ Multiple Answers
There are two types of Multiple Choice type questions on PTE Academic Reading section. For the sake of simplicity, we will refer to it as MCQ Multiple Answers in this blog post. PTE refers to one of them as “Multiple choice, choose multiple answers”. This is one of the trickier question types on the PTE Reading section as more than one option choices are correct.
What is the MCQ Multiple Answers task all about?
MCQ Multiple Answers is the second item type on PTE Reading part. In this task, you will see a passage. Based on the passage, there will be a passage with five, six or at most seven options. You need to select all the answer choices that you feel are correct.
This is how the MCQ Multiple Answers task screen may look like on the real PTE:
Preparation & Attempt Time
You will not have any separate time for this task. There is a general timer of around 32 to 40 minutes for the entire Reading section. So, you will need to manage your time smartly and decide where to invest more time.
Number of questions
Depending on the combination of questions on the test, you will find 2 or 3 questions of this type.
MCQ Multiple Answers is one of the few question types on the PTE where there is negative marking. You get 1 point for every correct option you choose and 1 negative mark for every wrong option. However, you will never get a score below 0. For instance, if you got two options incorrect and one option correct then you will not get minus 1. You will get only 0.
PTE Master Tips
Since there is negative marking, you must be sure before choosing any option. Do not choose any option that you are not sure about.
Different case scenarios:
Case 1 – In case of a question with 5 options, usually two options are correct.
Case 2: In case of a question with 6 options, usually two or three options are correct.
Case 3: In case of a question with seven options, usually three options are correct.
Read the question first and then read the passage with the purpose of finding the answer. If you try to read the passage first, then have a look at the options and then again go back to search the answer – you might end up wasting a lot of your precious time.
Be sure not to spend more than 2 minutes per question. If you do spend more than 2 minutes, you might feel the time pressure going forward and answering the easy questions. You might not even be able to see a few questions and the time could run out.
