PTE Speaking – Answer short question
Answer short question is like the rapid fire round in PTE Academic and hence, it is important to demonstrate immense concentration power along with good command over communicative English vocabulary. In this article, we will try to cast light on what this question pattern is and what strategies one must employ in order to score well.
What is the Answer short question task on the PTE Academic?
This is the fifth item type on PTE Speaking and Writing part. In this task, you will hear a question. You are supposed to answer the question in one or a few words.
The question content will mostly feature Australian, American and British accents.
This is how the Answer short question task screen may look like on the real PTE:
Length of the recording
Each question can be 3 to 9 seconds in length.
You will not be given any separate time to prepare for the answer.
You will have 10 seconds to convey your response.
Number of questions
Depending on the combination of questions on the test, you will find 10 to 12 items of Answer short question type on the PTE Speaking and Writing part.
The scoring happens on only one parameter – Content. The maximum score that you can get per Answer short question item is 1. Since you are listening to a question and speaking, the score is divided between Listening and Speaking skills. Also, this task can help you boost your score on vocabulary enabling skill.
PTE Master Tips
Sometimes, you may feel unsure about the answer. You may even feel that there are two or three words that might act as answers. In all such cases, be sure to speak all those words, because the computer will simply ignore the choices that might not be correct. However, an aspirant must not misuse this strategy especially when the question itself gives you two or three words to choose from. In such cases, speaking all the given options will not fetch you any score.
If you don’t immediately know the answer, you can bide some time by starting with “I think…the answer…is..”. This strategy is better than not speaking anything for 3 seconds and letting the microphone close.
Also, if you are not sure as to whether you spoke the word with correct pronunciation or not, you can repeat your answer.
Click on the “Next” button once you have answered the question, because otherwise the recorder might record unnecessary noise from the background.
